La Tour Eiffel – 5 things you didn’t know

So I have arrived in Paris and have just begun the second part of my year abroad which involves a marketing internship at a law firm. This week has all been very whirlwind as I’ve had to find somewhere to live, get to grips with the metro and settle in to the beautiful city which will be my home for the next 5 months.

However one of the touristy things I have managed to do so far is go up the Eiffel Tower. At 324 metres tall this monument is definitely one of the most iconic and defining aspects of Paris and attracts around 7 million visitors every year.

As the Eiffel tower is so famous and ubiquitous in tourism literature I thought I’d give you some fun facts which perhaps you didn’t know about the jewel in Paris’ crown.

1. The Eiffel Tower, named after its engineer Gustave Eiffel was originally intended to stand for 20 years and was first deployed as a meteorological observation post and a radio mast.

2. In December 1969 a skating rink opened on the first level of the tower and the first to try it out was a Moscow circus bear.

3. In 1987 the daredevil New Zealander, AJ Hackett performed an unauthorised bungee jump from the second level.

4. In 1993 the 150 millionth visitor; a 33 year old policewoman Jacqueline Martinez was greeted by an orchestra playing Charles Trent’s “La Tour Eiffel” and was presented with a brand new car.

5. In 1997 a rose was officially named “Tour Eiffel 2000” before an assembly of professional and amateur rose growers.

I thouroughly recommend a visit to the Eiffel Tower if you’re ever in Paris. Whether you climb the stairs or take the lift the views are breathtaking!
À tout a l’heure 🙂
